The electrical retailer Dixons has closed its online website at dixons.co.uk, saying it plans to focus on its multi channel and in-store presence. Dixons, which also owns the PC World and Currys chains, hasn't had a presence on the UK high street for six years, but has continued to trade online.

Thoughts and impact of online issues for Comet...

The move may actually be good news for consumers, as it will allow the group consolidation of its brands and we think it's time for the company to focus on improvements to its other major websites. All of the company's sites have had a pretty lacklustre performance in our testing over recent years.

We looked back at some of our recent website benchmarks and found that none of the group’s sites perform outstandingly - in our summer 2012 look at nearly 500 UK retail websites, Currys and Dixons took 111th and 112th place, with scores of less than five out of ten on our criteria, with PC World lagging slightly behind at 138th.In earlier surveys, Dixons had been much further down our table, at one point as low as 299th in the table. Scores for the three websites were virtually identical in the latest survey, as all three clearly use the same infrastructure.

We'll be reporting on this sector again in November, and will be watching the scores of Currys and PC World with interest.
